The International Education College
of Shenyang Ligong University

Introduction

With the development of Chinese foreign affairs in the fields of economy, business and culture, China’s official language, Mandarin, is becoming popular in more and more countries. The International Education College (IEC) of Shenyang Ligong University (SYLU) is a special college whose purpose is to teach Mandarin to international students.

IEC has seven levels of Chinese classes, all taught by our highly qualified teachers and designed to help our students learn as quickly as possible. By offering so many levels of Chinese study, we are able to place each student into a class specially designed to meet his or her needs.

Course content

Since our goal at IEC is to help our students advance as quickly as possible, we have designed each class to emphasize certain language learning skills. All levels use progressive teaching methods.

Primary I is for students with no previous knowledge of Chinese. In this beginning class, students concentrate on learning proper pronunciation of all vowels and consonants, with emphasis on the “r” sound, which is particular to Chinese. In addition, they study word and sentence stress, transliterate Chinese characters to Pinyin and use correct tone marks and pronunciation. By the end of this course, students will be able to carry on simple conversations.

Primary II students have previously studied Chinese and have a working vocabulary of about 600 words. This class masters basic grammar and linguistic techniques. Students practice natural conversation using correct pronunciation and tone.

Primary III is for students who have elementary conversation skills using a vocabulary of about 1000 words. This class emphasizes the use of specific words and phrases so students can easily converse on topics of daily life and common social activities. This class also enables students to use fluent speech and to write short articles with ease. By the completion of Primary III, students will have well-rounded skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing the Chinese language. They will be proficient in communication for daily and social activities.

Middle I students already express themselves well with about 1500 vocabulary words. This class focuses on mastering grammar and varying sentence patterns to improve oral skills.

Middle II is for students who easily express themselves with a vocabulary of about 1800 words. This class teaches various shades of meaning of vocabulary words. It also improves oral reading skills by emphasizing correct pronunciation.

Senior I is for fluent Chinese speakers with a vocabulary of 2200 words. This class trains students to use their vocabulary in a variety of situations. It also helps students improve note taking and dictation skills.

Senior II students have a vocabulary of about 3500 words and have little trouble expressing their feelings. This class teaches Chinese idioms and sayings as well as introducing Chinese culture. Students debate and discuss various topics of Chinese life and society using clear, systematic speech.

Additional courses

For students whose schedules do not permit study for a whole semester, we offer short-term training classes that begin every other month. These two-month classes are especially designed for Korean students. As well as short-term classes, we also offer two-hour HSK training courses every afternoon. With aggressive participation, beginners can reach the level of HSK Band 4 or Band 6 after one year’s study. After one and one half year’s study, they can reach the level of Band 6 or even Band 7. Finally, besides our regular course work, we offer additional classes such as character writing and calligraphy.
